It’s about runs, not reputation: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 – Cricket News Update
Regarding his appointment as stand-in captain in place of the injured http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Clarke-c1978, along with his poor performance in recent matches, Aussie batsman Ricky Ponting said he knows he can’t survive on reputation alone in order to get the selectors’ approval.
“It's not just reputation that is going to get you picked. You have to score runs, that's what it's all about. I know that as well as anyone," he said.
Ponting, widely acknowledged as a top-class batsman, has not been able to put on a good show in the ongoing Commonwealth Bank series, with his score not having risen above 6 runs in the four matches his team has played so far.
The national side has further suffered two consecutive defeats - losing their match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 at the Sydney Cricket Ground on February
17.
Admitting that his performances in the recent games had been poor, the 37-year-old nevertheless expressed faith in John Inverarity’s selection panel.
"My last four games have not been what they would have liked but I guess if the selectors were thinking that way already then they probably wouldn't have picked me for the start of the series,” he pointed out.
The right-handed batsman suggested that he still had much to offer the squad, his experience and seniority being chief among these contributions. He added that the selectors had advised younger players to take advantage of the senior teammates they had amidst
them.
"I think I am (worth a place in the team) but you'd better ask the selectors what they think about that," Ponting said.
The team management seems to share Ponting’s views about performance being superior to reputation. Aussie coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mickey-Arthur-c1969, in a recent statement, referred to the substitute skipper as “inspirational” but “jaded”, saying he needed to get his act back
together and improve his performance.
The Australian team is due to face India in the 7th match of the tri-series, which will take place on February 19, at the Gabba.
