It’s all about pitchers for Colorado Rockies this Winter Meetings - MLB Update
The Colorado Rockies are looking for quality pitchers, both starters and relievers in Nashville this week. The team had a torrid time in 2012 season, with their pitchers ranking at the bottom in just about every important pitching statistic in Major League
Baseball and made a huge contribution to the team’s 94 loses in the regular season.
Bill Geivett, the Rockies’ senior vice president of baseball operations said that the team’s youthful pitchers were trying to get their game together and were improving. "We feel like we have talented pitchers, but at the same time, they're trying to get
their game together," Geivett said. "Anybody we'd ever look to is probably more reliable at that stage of their career."
The team has historically picked young pitchers as some of them have done well over a period of time and have grown well. However, currently the team is faced with a lot of challenges in bouncing back from the worst year in franchise history. Pitching has
most certainly been their greatest weakness and it has to be overcome if they want to do well.
They have said to be getting some offers for right fielder Michael Cuddyer as well as centre fielder Dexter Fowler. The Rockies have previously maintained that they are not looking to trade Fowler but a good offer can possibly change their heart in this
regard.
Bill said that the team was not in a position of turning down good starting pitchers and they had certain ideas about their pre-season trade of Josh Outman from the Oakland Athletics. Josh pitched in seven games as a starter for the Rockies and did well
in the Dominican Winter League.
"We're not in the business of turning down starting pitching," Geivett said. "This Major League camp we're about to roll into is going to tell a lot about Mr. Outman. ... We really have no preconceived ideas of where we'd like to use him."
The Colorado ball club has some good starting pitchers amongst their ranks including Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin. They are looking to add at least one experienced starting pitcher. It will be critical that the preferred pitchers remain fit to play
during the coming season in order for them to be useful for the team.
There has also been talk of the Rockies looking for left-handed reliever especially after they traded Matt Reynolds to the Arizona Diamondbacks for first baseman Ryan Wheeler. Matt had a decent year with a 3-1 winning record in 71 games as a relief pitcher
and posted a 4.40 ERA. There have been suggestions that the Colorado ball club may be interested in Daniel Schlereth who was non-tendered by the Detroit Tigers.
It appears that the main emphasis of the Colorado Rockies will remain on pitchers during the course of the Winter Meetings this year. They will be looking for pitchers who are good and can perform well at the high altitude Coors Field.
