your players are either really young or getting really old.

wait until your young players get better than I would expect top 6 finishes (dunno about 4) in the next few years.

All teams go through this cycle of really great years and then really bad years.

Look at the cats; now they are high on the perch but within 5 or 6 years, they will be down near the bottom of the pit. The Lions went through the same thing and so has Esendon, but they got to the bottom :D
