  1. A Bar Mitzvah celebration nowadays has two parts, a Torah service in the synagogue, and then a party afterward.

Becoming a Bar Mitzvah ("son of the commandments") means your friends are considered grown up enough to be "adults" in the Jewish religion. This is marked by their helping to lead the synagogue service and by their reading from the Torah scroll. They have been practicing for about a year, working hard to learn the skills they'll be performing in front of all their family, friends, and community. It's a very important event in their lives, and an honor to you that you have been invited to share this important day with them.

For the synagogue, you should wear something pretty, but don't show too much skin. (If the party is immediately afterward,  you could wear a cardigan over your party-dress for the synagogue service.)

The Torah service can be long, and hard to follow because much of it is in Hebrew, but hopefully you'll have friends you can sit with. Just be respectful, try to follow the parts which are in English, pay attention when your friends give their speech, and do what you see the other people doing.

The party will be pure fun!  Dress up and enjoy  it!

Yes, you should bring a gift.

  2. Well, I don't know who mitzvah is, but I been to plenty of bars. They not fussy on what you wear there. Anything goes.
