  1. Well hey, at least you're gonna go out and try it.  In all honesty, the lifts tend to be the hardest part for any beginner.  Here is the best advice I can give you... When you get to the waiting area have your pole straps undone and in one hand.  Make sure you watch the chair come up behind you so you can gauge when the chair is under your rear.  Let the chair hit you in the back on the knees and just fall into the seat, make sure you keep your skiis straight, that is VERY crucial to not falling off or causing others to fall.  Enjoy the ride for the next few minutes.  When you're getting off... keep your ski tips up, the tail of your skiis will hit the ground first and flatten your skiis out, stand up when you get to the downward slope and push off the chair.  Aim straight and don't turn, if you turn you could hit someone and cause a crash, bad scene.  Good luck, have fun and don't be discouraged by the difficulty of the sport.  It is a great time, cold, but lots of fun.

  2. A chair lift is as hard to fall out of as a living room chair.  Sit quiet, listen to the instructions you are given and to get off, you stand stand forward and reach down the unloading ramp. Go straight down it and turn at the bottom. Do not try to slow down on the ramp.

You will not have to ride the lift until you are ready emotionally and skill wise. If your friends(?) or instructor insist, tell 'em to forget it.  Your first uphill transportation is probably by climbing or a rope tow, possibly a "Magic carpet"  the MC is like an escalator, and the easiest to ride of the ground lifts.

Your ski boots should fit TIGHT around your foot and ankle, only your foot and your sock should go in your boot.

Listen to your instructor, practice what you are shown.  Enjoy the sport.

  3. don't worry its normal to feel this way! i felt this way too when i first started to ski....you won't fall off the lift when its going up, but when its time to get off you most likley will. but, thats why you have a lesson. belive it or not you may learn how to ski within that first lesson. its very easy to ski after you get the hang out it. good luck and don't freak out! we've all been there. :D

  4. You have to work VERY hard to fall off the chair lift.  Also you don't jump off and ski, you stand up on your skis and slide right off the ramp, and the chair is a distant memory at that point!  Relax and enjoy, and most mountains don't just take a first time skier to the chair lift and say here you go!  You'll do fine!

  5. Its basically impossible to fall off the chairlift. If you're still scared go to the sides and hold on (go to the right if you wanna go on the right side of the slope and go to the left if you wanna go to the left side).  When you get off just keep your ski tips up and go down the tiny hill at the end of the lift, then try to turn. First don't get frustrated. Second, either take lessons or learn from a friend. Only ski on a green run (green being the easiest run you can go on), unless you get really good (and I mean really good) that day you can go on blues or blacks. The first time I went skiing I wasn't that good. Make sure you wear a helmet. Depending on where you go watch out for crazy snowboarders. Make sure you have good equipment and warm clothes, because if you're cold you'll get frustrated. Don't get poles unless you know how to do nice clean turns. If you don't know how to turn you can ski pizza (pizza is where you don't turn and go straight down, do this by putting the tips of your ski's a couple inches apart you'll go slower that way). Don't cut people in line at the lifts. If its your turn in line wait for the chair lift in front of you and then go

  6. Your best bet is to find out if there's a "rope tow." A lot of ski areas have a bunny hill that is accessible by using a rope tow & they're very easy to use; you don't even leave the ground so you don't have to worry about falling off a lift. You simply hold on to the moving rope with your skis on the ground & the rope will tow you to the top. You should have a good pair over leather gloves so it makes it easy to hold the moving rope & the leather protects your hands.
