Question:

Itty bitty kitty has a cold?

I found a teeny kitten 3 days ago in a ditch by my rural home. Her eyes are all runny, and I have had cats with this before. Now. I'm thinking she has a cold, sneezing and the like. What can I give her? She's about 3-4 weeks old. And of course EXtremely thin, she'd probably be dead if I didn't see her there.

I have antibiotic ear drops for my daughter, what would happen if I put them in eyes? I have been keeping her eyes cleaned with cotton balls and boric acid solution and homeopathic eye drops from the drug store.

Please answer as quickly as possible, I can't stand to see her ill!

Thank-you all!

  1. Aconitum napellus 30c (homeopathic) often aborts colds at the first stage. If that doesn't work, another remedy is needed. (Aconite won't hurt, though, and will minimally address her fright.) FYI, even healthy kitties these days are plagued with chronic runny eyes. It's something vets associate with the herpes virus at birth, and there's little to do (except invasive, unnecessary, usually unsuccessful treatment).

If she doesn't respond soon (within 24 hours), given her age, can you take her to a vet?

I've noticed runny eyes (clear) in kitties who have microchips. I mention this in case she seems healthy in time, yet her eyes continue to water.

The cotton balls with boric acid is a good interim treatment. The homeopathic drops are innocuous (probably a combination remedy, not classical homeopathy), although might help. Best wishes.

  2. Don't put anything in her eyes without a vet's approval. Kittens with eye infections need antibiotics for cats and at the proper dosage. Left untreated, she could go blind or even lose her eyes. If you can't get her to a vet, please take her to a shelter where she can get proper treatment. Homemade vetting almost always makes things worse. These are the only eyes she'll ever have.  Please don't play around with them.

Upper Respiratory Infections in kittens can be fatal if left untreated.

  3. You can give her a trip to the local vet.

    Update: Take her NOW!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!

  4. Unless you are a vet, do not give medications that are made for humans to animals, you can make things worse and cause more suffering than the original problem.  You also shouldn't be putting anything in his eyes - you should only be wiping the eyes gently with a warm wet papertowel (one towel per eye) and only the corners.  You should be taking the cat to the vet, or to the SPCA if you don't want the cost.  They can give the proper medications and drops...a cat can be blinded if you put the wrong thing in it's eyes, or even wipe the eye and not the corners.  Please stop using human meds on pets - they are not the same - and cats are much smaller than us.
