When you get an itunes gift card on the back is a code that is activated at the register. When you login to your itunes account you can find a link in the "quick links" section to the right of the itunes store homepage to redeem your gift card.

The best use is as a gift. You can purchase them at many stores (Target, Safeway, Walgreens, etc). The card can be used to make purchases on iTunes. A parent could give it to a kid or you could send a card to your friend. That way you do not need to use a credit card.
