Iturra: Champions League involvement not an excuse for Malaga

Malaga CF’s recent poor run in the domestic league continues as they fell to their second consecutive home defeat of the season at the hands of Real Sociedad on Sunday
Malaga have already qualified for the last-16 of Europe’s most prestigious club competition, the UEFA Champions League, with two games to spare.
Yet they have been struggling in La Liga recently as their form has dramatically dipped. Last week they suffered their first home defeat of the season after Rayo Vallecano defeated them.
Regardless, Malaga midfielder, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Iturra-c23407, believes his team’s performance is to blame and has stated their involvement in the Champions League is not an excuse for the poor run in the Primera Division.
The midfielder has conceded that they were outplayed by their opponents because they were better than them not because of a fatigue factor some may suggest.
“When you are beaten then for me it is because the other team was better, so to look for explanations such as tiredness makes no sense.”
The 28-year-old has said that he doesn’t want to make excuses for their blunder against Sociedad, but admitted that they anticipated getting some points from the two fixtures they have just lost.
“I don’t want to seek excuses because we didn’t expect to get no points from the last two home games against team that, on paper, we should have beaten.”
Moreover, the Chilean has also spoken on his team’s involvement in the Champions League and admitted that they need to rest so that so that they can concentrate on the domestic league.
Regardless, he insists on his believe that this should not be an excuse for Malaga.
“However, after the Champions League games we need to rest from the travelling and be ready to play in La Liga, but it’s no justification.”
Finally, the midfielder is still at loss and can’t fathom how his team lost the match.
“A goal after just 47 seconds and then one after a deflection off one of our players did not help, but we now have a week to work on things and analyse where we went wrong.”
Malaga’s domestic league campaign is in stark contrast to their European adventure this season. They are yet unbeaten in the group and have qualified to the knockout stages with two games still to play.
