  1. Be professional and nothing else.  A is out, B is out, C is somewhat inappropriate so still out, and D is not necessary unless marking on a test paper and saying good job or something like that.

  2. B is the only truly problematic action. It lowers students' self-esteem, promotes needless competition and is pedagogically counterproductive.

  3. i think its all inappropriate. because now a days you can be charged for some kind of harassment for anything you do if your a teacher.

  4. The answer is without a doubt B.

Very highly discouraged in a traditional classroom setting.  Period.

  5. B

  6. A. I would say that a female teacher could get away with hugs more-so than a male teacher

    B. Most definitely

    C. Not if the humor is directed toward somebody for humiliation purposes.  Having a sense of humor is a top 5 characteristic for a teacher.

    D. It is better to say "Thank you" to the student personally than write it in notes.  Notes can be misinterpreted to mean something else.

  7. Is that a fact? lol

  8. A.  There is nothing wrong with showing students you care.  You should always stay hands-off and talk appropriately, but there is nothing wrong with showing that you care.  Showing that you have feelings and are actually a human being encourages students to produce higher quality work many times.  They want to do well for you.

    B.  When student names are involved it is never OK to compare work.  However, if you are working on editing it is fine to take the names off of papers and edit together in a class.  At that point, once names are off, you can point out strong and weak points of both papers.  Sometimes it is best if you use papers from another class so that nobody says, 'Oh that's my paper!'

    C.  Incorporating humor into the classroom is fine as long as it is not mean-spirited or takes away from the lesson.  Sometimes it is the funny stuff that helps a student remember an important concept.

    D.  Students enjoy notes on their papers...anything like "I appreciate your hard work" or "Fantastic job!" or even "I love the improvement you are making" etc. is completely fine.  Think about it...we do better when our boss tells us we are doing a good job.  Students respond the same way (most of the time anyways!!!).

  9. It can't be inappropriate to act appropriately, so A is out.  I suspect that whoever wrote this question had B in mind, but it is not really inappropriate to compare one student's work to another unless it is to be critical of one of them (imagine an art teacher comparing one student's painting which used blue to another one which used shades of red, and you see that comparison doesn't always mean someone is treated unfairly).  "Joking around" can be looked at in a lot of different ways.  Some of the best teachers use a lot of humor in class, but it is there to enhance learning, not just to waste time.  If a teacher were to spend class time goofing off, it could be seen as inappropriate, but you couldn't say that all joking with students would be inappropriate.  Finally, writing notes of appreciation to students, while I would guess unusual, would be appropriate as long as the letters are not sent to some and not to others who did the same thing, and as long as the contents of the letter are truly just appreciation.
