Ivan Basso confident ahead of the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Ivan Basso is confident ahead of the first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
The cyclist is having a dry season and has not opened his 2012 winning account yet.
He finished the Tour De Romandie with a 33rd overall spot after the final general classifications.
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky finished at the first overall position and filled his bag with yet another final general classifications victory.
Andrew Talansky, Rui Costa, Richie Porte and Michael Rogers finished at the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Ivan finished more than 2 minutes behind Wiggins and accepted the fact that he needs to work harder to fight for the top Giro spot.
He was quoted as saying, “If I can make the same jump in condition between Romandie and the Giro as I did between Trentino and Romandie, then I’ll be alright”.
“On Monday, I’ll ride for three hours behind a scooter. Tuesday, I’ll do a couple of hour’s tranquillo to recover and on Wednesday”.
“I’ll do four and a half hours including the climb of Campo dei Fiori, before taking the plane to Denmark”.
After a slow start to his 2012 campaign, Ivan has definitely shown signs of improvement at the Giro del Trentino and the Tour of Romandie.
The 34-year-old is all set to mark his sixth appearance at the Italian race starting on May 5, 2012.
He secured the first overall position during the 2006 and 2010 versions of the race and is certain to find his previous form in the coming edition of the Giro.
While commenting on his current form, Basso told Gazzetta dello Sport, “This Romandie didn’t given me any personal satisfaction in terms of results, but a lot in terms of morale and condition”.
The cyclist also admired his brilliant form during the five days of racing and is positive to continue his dominance at the 2012 version of the Giro.
The 2012 version of the Giro is scheduled between May 5-27 and Basso is optimistic to find his winning ways at the event.
