Ivan Basso happy with the Giro d’ Italia start
Ivan Basso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale had a good start to his Giro d’ Italia campaign and the cyclist is currently content with his overall position after the third stage of the race.
The Italian finished the opening stage of the race 39 seconds behind the race leader Taylor Phinney and achieved the 35th position.
Ivan finished the second stage of the race at the 99th spot and dropped to 36th overall position after the stage 2 classifications.
He achieved the 101 position during the third stage of the race and currently holds the 37th overall spot after the stage 3 classifications.
Basso is 39 seconds behind the race leader Taylor Phinney of Team BMC while Geraint Thomas of Team Sky and Alex Rasmussen of Team Garmin-Barracuda hold the second and the third positions in the respective order.
Basso is having a victory-less season and the cyclist is positive to find his winning ways at the coming stages of the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
He has secured the top overall spot during the 2006 and the 2010 editions of the Italian Grand Tour and is a clear favourite for the current version of the Giro.
The 34-year-old noted that the first three stages of the race were quite difficult but the weather conditions really suited him.
While talking to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Basso noted that he is ideal placed at the Giro after the first three stages and is looking forward to the fourth stage of the race after the rest day.
He cited, “I brought back the win at the Giro in 2006 and 2010 by riding that way”.
“My teammates have faith in me, so does all the staff. They all believe and they’ll keep working to put me in the ideal conditions to try and do well in this Giro”.
Ivan was part of the massive stage 2 crash which involved several cyclists including Taylor Phinney and Mark Cavendish but was lucky to survive any major injuries.
He briefed, “I hope that the fall doesn’t have consequences that will affect the rest of [Phinney’s] Giro”.
“I don’t exactly what the situation was with time bonuses, maybe he was up there because he was worried someone would pick up seconds to take the jersey off him”.
Basso is now eyeing the 32.2 kilometre team’s time trial stage 4 of the race scheduled on May 9th, 2012 to improve his overall classifications spot.
