Ivan Dodig stuns Nikolay Davydenko in the opening ground – BMW Open 2013
Croatian contender, Ivan Dodig, outclassed the two-time former champion, Nikolay Davydenko, in straight sets at the BMW Open 2013 on Monday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the Russian veteran to secure a spot in the second round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Munich, Germany.
The 28-year-old showed his old spark at this outdoor clay court tournament and eventually overpowered Davydenko in their second meeting. As a result, Dodig avenged his loss at the US Open two years ago and levelled the scores by 1-1 against the Russian at
the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series.
Dodig made a thunderous start into this match. He drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Croat cashed another break chance in the seventh game and leaped to a 5-2 lead. Despite squandering his chance of serving out the set
in the following game, Dodig held his serve once again and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 56th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Dodig kept momentum rolling in the following set. He swiftly slid his entire serves with poise. The Croat got the breakthrough in the fifth game and clicked the set with a 6-4 win.
On the whole, Dodig clobbered a slightly lower first serve share of 62 per cent as compared to his rival’s 65 per cent but impressively marked 26 out of 37 points on it. He fired stunning five aces and ended the match with 62 points.
Next challenge for Dodig is his second seeded compatriot, Marin Cilic, in the second round. Cilic received a first round bye after being the top four players at this event.
Marinko Matosevic will join the Croat in the proceeding round. He recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory against the German challenger, Kevin Krawietz, and powered into the second round.
The Australian star cashed two break chances in the opening set and eventually recorded a 6-2 victory. In the proceeding set, Matosevic carried his rhythm and with a single break of serve, he clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
