Ivan Dominguez decides to continue his professional career as he returns from retirement
Ivan Dominguez who announced his retirement at the end of 2010 has decided to join MRI Performance / Franco Bicycles for next few months. The idea behind his addition to the team is that the 35-year-old rider will bring some experience in the new squad.
The cyclist shared his thoughts with the media as he mentioned that a lot of people are unaware of the fact that he has resigned as he stated, “I decided to take time off and retire. My wife and son had been there for me all that time and I wanted to spend
more time with them, my family.”
On his retirement, Dominguez accepted that the tough economic conditions have made it impossible to survive out of the salary as the package offered by the teams is not as attractive because the competition is increasing every day.
You can only get your desired salary if you are winning the races consistently as he said, “The way I see US is that if you are a good rider you can’t get a contract because they think that you are too expensive and when you are a bad rider you can’t get
a contract because you are not winning.”
Dominguez was born in Havana and started his career as a Cuban National Team cyclist as he won the Pan American gold medal in 1997. He moved to Miami and lived with his uncle in 1998 and used to work in a shoe factory before he started racing in the Miami
based local bike races and became professional in 2001.
Ivan congratulated Chris Horner on winning stage 4 of Tour of California and Chris suggested him to start riding again and that is how he decided to back his retirement and came back to cycling as he stated, “I figured that if nothing else, I would ride
for fun.”
Dominguez is highly regarded as one of the best sprinters in America as he has proved it on many occasions including his famous win over Thor Hushovd during the stage 7 of Tour of California in 2007.
