Ivan Endara labours against Marcel Felder in the second round – Manta Open 2011 CH
Ivan Endara, the Ecuadorian qualifier, ground down Marcel Felder of Uruguay during a succession of furious rallies to do away with the world No. 383 with a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline.
The 23-year-old, Endara came out on top in most of the drawn-out exchanges in the opening stages and surged into a 4-3 lead that caused a lot of nervousness among the Felder’s fans at the beginning.
However, Felder did claw his way back with a couple of break points to draw level at 4-4, but it was all in vain as the Ecuadorian held confidently to break Felder’s serve for the second time to move a set ahead.
Being down one set to love, the Uruguayan began the second set confidently, breaking Endara in the opening game. After breaking his opponent’s serve, Felder indulged into some characteristic fist-pumping but the blessedness did
not last longer as he dropped his serve immediately in the next game to make it 3-3.
Longing for a spot in quarterfinals, the Uruguayan had to dig deep to turn things around but was found floored when he went wide with a forehand after another lengthy rally on Endara’s decisive match point.
Endara clinched his straights win by 62 percent of points on service, 48 percent of points on return and 54 percent of points in total. In contrast, Felder lost the match with a difference of eleven points, winning 52 percent of
points on service, 38 percent on return and 46 percent of points in total.
With this win, the 23-year-old Endara has won their first encounter against the Uruguayan, going one up in their head-to-head score and now marches on into the quarterfinals where he will face Riccardo Ghedin of Italy for the first
time in his career.
Among all the lucky winners on Wednesday, Brian Dabul of Argentina was the lucky beneficiary of the unfortunate retirement of Kevin Kim in the second round of the tournament, being played here at Manta, Ecuador.
The American was trailing 3-6, 1-0 when he needed to call it quits, as he could not play any further, wrapping up the match in just 38 minutes of play.
Dabul had made 87 percent of points on service, 39 percent of points on return and 59 percent of points in total to reach the quarterfinals where he will meet Julio Cesar Campozano of Ecuador.
