Ivan Lendl: “Both Andy and I were saying, Give us six to nine months” – Tennis News
World number three, Andy Murray, overpowered the Serb former top ranked superstar, Novak Djokovic, in an epic five-setter during the final of the US Open Championship. He won the first Major title at the age of 25 and broke the 76 years long drought of Great Britain.
However, the clear cut improvement in the game style of Murray is witnessed ever since the former world number one, Ivan Lendl, has been hired as his coach and mentor. Lendl saw an immense change in the personality of the Scot who has more faith in himself and believes that he can topple the big three players of the modern era.
Lendl commented, “Both Andy and I were saying, 'Give us six to nine months'. Do the maths. You can help somebody, clearly, in a very short period of time. However, it takes longer than that to help more, for the progress to set in. You cannot do that in one week, you cannot do it in one month.”
It seems like the change of luck and coach has definitely worked for the number one Briton who has struggled to make a name for him as one of the contenders for the Grand Slam titles just because he was used to live under the shadow of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Sometimes the upsets from the lower ranked players like David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych stopped his march towards the maiden Major title.
However, he just had to face the defending champion this time around because the Spanish superhero was suffering from the chronic knee injury and didn’t take part in the tournament whilst the Swiss Maestro was ousted by the likes of the Czech superstar, Tomas Berdych. So, everything went in favour of the Briton who also showed immense improvement and command to thump the Serb.
Lendl further added, “We all know that it's a war out there," he said. "It's very unlikely you're going to win in a blowout, especially against a guy like Novak. These players are so good, and the game is much deeper than when I played 20 years ago.”
Murray needs to continue the improvement and start bashing the top seeds on regular basis to retain the confidence level he has gained from back-to-back big titles including the Olympics gold medal and the US Open Championship. The comeback of Nadal will make things much more interesting.
