Ivan Lendl: “Tennis is a very difficult sport to win these days” – Tennis News
World number three, Andy Murray, broke the duck of the Grand Slam titles at the US Open in New York when he lifted his maiden 2000 points Grand Slam trophy after beating the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, in an epic five-setter.
He also grabbed the Gold Medal at London Olympics in August beating the hot-favourite Swiss Maestro Roger Federer in the final. It was a terrific year for the 25-year-old Briton who reached the new heights of tennis and became one of the most dangerous competitors
on the tennis circuit for the elite players like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Murray has a chance to create another history at the Australian Open in January 2013. If he manages to win the second successive Grand Slam title, he will become the first Briton in the 76 years history to accomplish such a milestone.
However his coach, the former world number one Ivan Lendl is keeping a cool lid on the talks about Murray’s new challenge and trying to lower the expectations of people to help Murray establish a strong momentum without a burden of hope on his shoulders.
The Czech-American former professional stated, “Tennis is a very difficult sport to win these days with the likes of (Novak) Djokovic, (Roger) Federer and (Rafael) Nadal and Andy in that group -- it's very, very difficult to succeed.
I think you can look at many eras in the game and say there have been many good players at the same time," he said. "You can look at the early Eighties with Connors, McEnroe, Bjorg and myself, and compare it to the Sixties and early Seventies with all the
Australians there. I don't think you should be comparing one era to the other because it's just not comparable.”
Nadal has been out of action ever since the Wimbledon Championships second round loss has promised to make a comeback in the Australian Open Next Year. He wasn’t there when the third ranked Briton accomplished all his glories.
Therefore, a lot of different expectations are lined up for the year’s first Grand Slam Championship that will take place in the midst of January at Melbourne.
