Ivan Morales knocks out Edgar Martinez and becomes WBC silver super flyweight champion - Boxing News
Ivan Morales, the surging young Mexican pugilist, stunned the boxing fans by his impressive first round technical knockout win over fellow countryman Edgar Martinez and collected the vacant WBC silver super flyweight title, in a 10-round bout held on April
23, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Auditorio Municipal situated in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and the event was promoted by Erik Morales of Box Latino. The above duo headlined the event whereas the Monday night show was co-headlined by the non-title
eight-round battle between Emilio Bojorquez and Abner Lopez.
The bout can be declared easily as a one-sided sparring session in which Ivan outclassed Edgar perfectly while putting forth a flawless performance. Ivan, 20, the younger brother of Erik Morales truly proved that he also possesses the same traits that his
elder brother has exhibited several times.
The young Mexican lad was entering in his 17th career bout and boasted 16 wins. The southpaw brawler has nailed 11 of his opponents by sheer knockout and possesses a pretty strong and raw powered jab.
In addition to impressive technical facets, he has also solidified his resume by pinning names having quite a reputation in the division such as Juan Velasquez, Roberto Lopez and others.
Ivan, infamous as the ‘Terrible II’ or ‘Nino Maravilla’, was entering the ring after collecting an impressive knockout win over Ricardo Armenta. His Monday night showdown opponent, Edgar, was easy bait for the young lad.
Martinez, who follows the orthodox stance, was entering in his career’s 15th bout. Also known as ‘Chololo’, Edgar has collected just nine wins in his career and five of them via knockout.
With a worse win ratio, an under par knockout proficiency and above all three losses in last five bouts, were enough motivation for Ivan and definitely a thought provoking aspect for Edgar.
The bout kicked off and as it was expected, Ivan moved forward to collect an intimidating swift win and threw wildly the left-right combinations targeting Edgar’s face and body simultaneously.
Martinez was unable to cater the southpaw disadvantage and after the passage of just two minutes and 45 seconds Edgar fell on the ring floor. The referee completed his 10-count and Ivan was, later on, officially dubbed as the owner of WBC super flyweight
gold.
It must be noted that the duo was in their very first title bout and Ivan not only grabbed the golden chance but also defended his long undefeated win streak. With this win, Ivan has 17 wins in his account and Edgar has collected his sixth career defeat
and third via KO.
