Ivan Nova ineffective as New York Yankees lose to Toronto Blue Jays 0-6 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were shut-out by the Toronto Blue Jays 0-6 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Thursday, September 27 in the opening game of their four match series.
Yankees wasted a large number of scoring opportunities and eventually paid the price. Despite taking the loss, Yankees are placed first on the American League East Division standings table, one game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova was hit hard in his four plus innings as he gave up six hits and four runs to take his eighth loss of the season. Nova will be very disappointed with his effort and surely he will be looking to put things back on track.
"He just hasn't had the command; that's the bottom line," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said.
Relief pitchers Clay Rapada, Derek Lowe and David Aardsma combined to give just two runs in three plus solid innings but New York was unable to score enough runs on Thursday.
Blue Jays’ starter Brandon Morrow gave up four hits in seven scoreless innings to claim his ninth win of the season. It will not be wrong to say that he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash.
"It didn't seem like he was really raring back tonight," New York's Nick Swisher said about Morrow. "It felt like he was pitching. He was throwing a lot more cutters than I remember, a lot more changeups, breaking balls, things like that, rather than that
flat 96 (mph). He did a good job."
"We know what's at stake right now and we've just got to go out there and keep picking up wins," Swisher said. "We've got a little six-game playoff race."
Brett Lawrie provided Blue Jays with an excellent start as he homered to right in the third inning to put his side on the board. Edwin Encarnacion also had a great time on the plate as he drove in crucial runs to help his side take a commanding 5-0 lead.
J.P. Arencibia homered to left in the eighth to help Toronto end the game on a positive note.
