Ivan Nova leads New York Yankees to emphatic 4-1 win against Washington Nationals – MLB Update
New York Yankees completed an emphatic series sweep as they beat National League East leaders Washington Nationals 4-1 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, June 17 in the finale of their three match series of their 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Joe Girardi and company are now the leaders of American League East Division with an impressive 40-25 record. Throughout this season, they have shown us their incredible bounceback ability. Credit must be given to the Yankees for displaying some top quality baseball skills over the last couple of weeks.
Nationals, on the other hand, entered the series with a mighty 38- 23 win-loss record and the fans had high hopes from them. However, the Yankees gave them a taste of what they can expect to face throughout this season, dominating their opponents in all three games of the series.
"When you're playing as well as we are, no matter what the situation is, you feel like you're going to get it done," Yankees' manager Joe Girardi said.
"We're still not happy about that," said Mark Teixeira. "I wish I could tell you the issue. We just have to be better at hitting with runners in scoring position. We can talk about offense all we want; the fact is our pitching staff is why we are here today."
New York is now on a sensational nine game winning streak and it will be interesting to see if they can continue their outstanding form in their upcoming games to make it the playoffs with ease.
Mark Teixeira provided the Yankees with a positive start as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the first inning and Captain Derek Jeter scored the first run for his team.
Curtis Granderson homered to right in the fifth to break the tie as the Yankees reclaimed the lead at 2-1. Robinson Cano homered to centre and Teixeira scored in the seventh to take the lead beyond Nationals’ lead.
Starting pitcher Ivan Nova made quick work of the Nationals, giving up just seven hits and one run in seven plus efficient innings.
