Ivanovic successful, Kanepi ousted at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open
Serbian tennis star Ana Ivanovic crushed Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 on Friday to make it to the third round at the 2011 ATP Masters Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
The Serbian looked to be in complete control of her game right from the start and broke the serve 4 times in the first set. Although she lost her very first two serve games of the match, she stayed focused to win the opening set
quite comfortably at the end 6-2.
In the second set, Ivanovic continued with the same winning momentum. She held on to her serve games and broke the serve thrice to complete a thumping victory after only 59 minutes of play. Her opponent Kimiko certainly had chances
in the match but struggled to convert them in her favour. The Japanese tennis-pro won only 2 of the 12 break points she had in the match.
Ivanovic’s serve was effective and on target most of the times as she fired 4 aces in the match. She took complete advantage of her opponents week serve and thus converted an impressive 70 percent of the points on serve return.
The Serbian executed her forehand backhand shots flawlessly to put her opponent under extreme pressure. In addition to her attacking power, Ivanovic had a rock solid defense which allowed her to save 10 out of 12 break points against her.
Ivanovic has done reasonably well on the tour since the beginning of this season. She reached the quarterfinals at Pattaya City and then upset 6th seed Jelena Jankovic to move into the quarterfinals at BNP Paribas Open
just over a week ago. However the Serbian, who is seeded 19th at the tournament, must bring consistency in her game to survive in a field full of fierce competitors.
Meanwhile world number 101 Virginie Razzano stunned 14th seed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3, 7-6 in the second round in Key Biscayne, Florida.
The 27 year old Frenchwoman, Razzano took the first 6-3 after scoring the crucial serve break. The Estonian fought back well in the second set an took the set into a tie-breaker but couldn’t stop her opponent from ensuring a well
deserved victory.
Ranked 16 in the world, Kanepi struggled right from the start. She missed several chances early on in the match which of course dented her confidence. Her opponent Razzano on the other hand looked in great form and pressurized
her opponent with her effective baseline play. Razzano will take on Ana Ivanovic in her next match-up.
Kanepi has been struggling to find her peak form since the start of the year 2011. Although she reached the semifinal at Paris Indoor earlier this year, she always looked vulnerable in certain aspects of the game. She will be looking
to correct the errors in her game before she returns to the tour.
