  1. You mean you STUDY classical ballet and now you'd like to try contemporary ballet. (You are clearly not a professional ballet dancer because you'd know that "transitioning" as a professional is simply a matter of auditioning for another company that does more contemporary repertoire.) As a student, you don't "transition," you simply change the focus of your training a bit. For contemporary ballet, you should add modern dance classes to your schedule, but you should still keep up with all your regular ballet classes.

Hopefully you're not confusing contemporary ballet with the "contemporary" dance that you see on TV. That style arises out of competition dancing that is actually a less technical form than classical ballet. It may look technical, in that it tosses in lots of gymnastic tricks, but those tricks are achieved with little regard for proper ballet placement and turnout. So for that kind of contemporary, you may want to take more jazz and gymnastic classes. But if you've been following "So You Think You Can Dance" this season, you should note that famed contemporary choreographer, Mia Michaels, advised Courtney Galiano (a competition dancer) to beef up her technical training because her lack of such things as proper lines and pointed feet definitely showed.

Nothing beats the "classical" training of a well-rounded dancer who takes a full complement of ballet, modern and jazz. Those styles pretty much prepare you for everything else.

  2. It should be quite easy...

Just take some classes.  If you have ballet training it will be quite easy to make the move.

Edit: Take ALL the classes you can get yourself into...being a well rounded dancer is key...

    Modern

    Jazz

    Lyrical

    even try some hip-hop...

  3. take classes in all styles of dance to be more well-rounded and therefore a better dancer.

more importantly, take classes you like and have fun in
