  1. Pay as much attention as you can, run it through your head and don't practice on and off, stick with it. Loads of martial arts problems come from people not practicing enough.

  2. Studying the Martial Arts regardless of method is no different than studying anything else. If you are not getting it after a year ask yourself: Am I putting in my homework? ie; practicing every chance you get, thinking about it if your not physically doing it etc.  95% of 'going blank' is generally not practicing enough at your stage of training. Another thing is learning is basically a one in four equation, that is you need to be shown about four times for the average person, in order to get the basics of a given technique. Finally talk to your Instructor about it he should have insights into why you are having trouble. Hope this helped good luck.

  3. learn to memories the positions. Break it down to parts if you have to. The body positions, the arm positions and the leg positions.

Another way is by watching a lot of mma dvd. And those positions will naturally imprint in your head. Replay the tap outs.

  4. "Off and on" for about a year is not enough time to have learned to think and react under pressure. You need to be putting in 3-5 hours a week every week to see improvement. You need at least 2 hours a week to maintain your current skill level. Any less than that and you will go backwards. Spend more time at class and soon everything will start to make more sense.

  5. Try learning judo aswell. They go well together.  I practice judo, and i go to a dojo every no and then that practices brazillian jiu jitsu and judo.  A lot of times, i know i dont really like having jiu jitsu players at judo tourni's, but it really gives you an advantage to know both
