A black dog is a spectral being found primarily in the folklores of the British Isles. The black dog is essentially a nocturnal spectre, and its appearance was regarded as a portent of death. It is generally supposed to be larger than a physical dog, and often has large, glowing eyes.

It is often associated with electrical storms (such as Black Shuck's appearance at Bungay, Suffolk), and also with crossroads, places of execution and ancient pathways. Its Welsh form is confined to the sea-coast parishes, and on the Norfolk coast the creature is supposed to be amphibious, coming out of the sea by night and travelling about the lonely lanes.

The origins of the black dog are difficult to discern. It is impossible to ascertain whether the phantom originated in the Celtic or Germanic elements in British culture. Throughout European mythology, dogs have been associated with death. Examples of this are the Cŵn Annwn, Garm and Cerberus, all of whom were in some way guardians of the underworld. This association seems to be due to the scavenging habits of dogs. It is possible that the black dog is a survival of these beliefs.

Black dogs are almost universally malevolent, although few (such as the Barghest) are held to be directly harmful. Most are a portent of death, or are in some way associated with the Devil. Some, however, like the Gurt Dog in Somerset and the Black Dog of the Hanging Hills (below) may sometimes act benevolently.

Generally speaking, dreaming about a dog is really about dreaming about your friends, loyalty, friendship, etc.  So, think of who might be symbolized with the black dog, say a person who always wears black, or someone who is African-American or a friend who writes dark poetry, well you get it, think of who it might be.  More than likely, they are going through some kind of conflict and you are thinking you need to help them out.  Anything like that going on with a friend?

Dogs represent loyalty and companion. Maybe you need a companion who will accompany you all the time besides sharing your problems that you cannot tell anybody, at the same time, will not betray you.

In chinese superstition, if you see black dog that means it will bring you fortune. And you felt like that you were protected and then followed it, which means that someone in the future will be your helping hand who will give you guidance financially.

the black dog COULD symbolize family.  you have an obvious need to protect family.  Go where your family goes.  it does make sense.

but does the black dog symbolize family?  it could be some person you want to go out with and you want to protect and follow them so they are yours.

it could symbolize a group of ppl (no racism intended if any was there at all).  A group of friends possibly?  all of them make sense.  much more detail needed.

remember its just a dream so it may not mean anything at all

I've never had a reacuring(sp?) dream, but...

Dreams have the potiential to represent something; maybe an old pet, or family member?? I hate to sound like a nerd but maybe there's someone/something in ur life u feel u have to protect, even though their technically above u... err, older or more mature than u...? Someone who u obviously suppose ur suppose to follow or look up to.

U can look up some stuff online about dreams, I suppose... I'm no expert.
