only way to find out is when you try to pair up the card to the new box, they will ask you the serial number and version number of the sky box , but I don't think you should have any problem since if a subscriber terminates his contract before 12 months, sky will send out an engineer to de-install the box otherwise the subscriber will get charged full price for it. unless the guy that sold the box stopped paying during his contract and left his address.....

just ask the seller about it, after 12 months or if the box was purchased as freesat it belongs to the user who is free to do what ever he wants with it.

Sky leases boxes and service. You if you stop paying service and you owe sky money, that means the service has NOT been canceled by the customer but suspended by the company.

The company will NOT activate or transfer the account details until you pay off the previous customer's debts.

I probably wont get best answer even though I answered this question 2wice.

They do this because there is no way to make sure that you are who you say you are.

You have to call sky and tell them that you are buying a used box online and would like to verify its serial number to make sure its not in debt..

have you paid via paypal? if you have then "Paid off" means that you have paid for it and you just have to wait for it to be sent to you.

You also get a receipt for payments made.

probably means that the seller has finished his 12 months contract therefore taking over ownership of the box. untill that contract is up or rolls over then the box belongs to sky.
