Ive got a 98 mustang, and i was wondering what i had to do to it before installing a turbo kit.?

Its a stock motor and i was wondering what i had to do to it before i get the turbo so i dont blow my engine, thanks in advance!

  1. You should be careful due to mileage, You can't overstress a high mileage engine with out the bottom end coming apart.


  2. nothing if you keep the boost under 6 lbs, over that you'll need low compression pistons, upgrade fuel pump, larger injectors and radiator and oil cooler..

    oh and don't buy one of those cheap turbos off eBay, they're made in China and aren't any good..get one from a reputable dealer.

You have a couple of options: If you are on a strict budget, you don't need to modify your V6 Mustang, just ensure that your turbo has a spring on the waste gate that won't allow it to exceed 5-6#. You will need to be careful of the following: 1) Blow-by on your older pistons, which will contaminate your oil - so be prepared for more frequent oil changes 2) Blown head gasket. That motor is notorious for that and adding forced induction won't help that matter. 3) Detonation due to improper octane and/or lack of fuel. With more pressure, your engine will be able to burn more fuel... If it is starved for fuel (lean) it is horrible on the engine. You may need additional fuel pumps and larger injectors. 4) A computer program that re-maps your spark table and your fuel table.

    The approximate cost of a quality turbo kit with all of the needed components is just over $5000 + installation. (This would include new injectors, intercooler, turbo, plumbing, and all necessary fastners along with a pre-programed hand held programer. You would likely be better off upgrading to a V-8 Mustang with the $5000... I would personally recommend against the modification. If you are finding a turbo system for considerably less money.... you get what you pay for.

    Second option is if money is no object. 1) Replace all of your rotating engine internals with forged components 2) Switch to lower compression pistons 3) change your spark plugs to a hotter plug 4) Replace your fuel system with something that can feed enough fuel 5) pay for a day at an experienced dyno shop and have them dial in a custom tune on your PCM
