  7. Base yourself in Venice.  It's a wondrous place, and Vicenza, Padua,Verona are within two hours on the train Treviso is a little city 30 min North worthy of half a day.  You are only an hour from Ferrara, and two from Bologna and Rimini.

  8. Both Rome and Venice are totally unforgettable. They are just like dream cities. Rome has more to see and do but Venice stays with you forever.

  9. Depends on what you mean by a "few days."  Rome, Florence and Venice are the three "must-see" cities of Italy, although dozens more are worth a visit.

If I had, say three to five days, I would go to any one of the three named above.  In three days, stick to the city itself;  with one or two more, take a day trip outside--Tivoli or Palestrina from Rome, Siena or Lucca from Florence, Padua or Ravenna from Venice.

  10. For my honeymoon, my husband and I did an 11 day tour of Italy starting south and winding our way up north. We did the whole thing via train. We flew into Rome, spent 2 days there. Rome is full of history from the catacombs to the gorgeous gold encrusted churches to the opulent Vatican. Great shopping(leather and purses) and food! We then took a train to Florence and spent two days there combing through museums and looking at the most amazing statue of David. Florence is absolutely gorgeous. Great shoe shopping there. Next, we spent two days in Venice. Wow! The water taxis and the food was amazing. We also purchased great venetian glass and gold jewelry is priced great there. Also the  You also can visit the Isle of Murano. Next, we spent two days in Milan. Milan is the fashion capital of Italy. Great clothing shopping, beautiful churches! We ended up with our final days spent in Monaco. Which is amazingly beautiful and with incredible water views. We flew out of Nice's airport in France. You can take a 20 minute helicopter ride to the airport from less than $100 for a couple.

  11. The area around Lake Garda. It's magnificent. Whilst there you can also visit Verona
