Hello well ive been watching alot of of old western military horses and thought of a few questiones. How do the military horses handle human and horse deaths around them ? and how can they stay calm while some ones getting hanged ? now they must of had training to do this but how do they cope with it. and i know they are desensitized by loud noise.

  1. Believe it or not hoses that the used for the Calvary in the west would be much like the horses back in the old knight days. They would actually look forward to battle. They where trained for it. As far as some one hung from horse back normally the horse was spooked to create the drop required to break the neck when hung.

The adrenaline, just like in person would help the horse perform their job. Calvary horses would be ridden by several people so the human death was minimal. And in many cases they did not want to kill the horse because they where a valuable resource. The native americans would try not to kill the horses because they need them more than the US did either for trade or for food. The Apache loved horse and mule meat.

  2. I just wanted to add one more bit of information to this.

The US cavalry experimented with crossing zebras and horses with the hopes of creating a war mount with exceptional endurance.  This was given up as a failure due the majority of them having bad temperaments, being small in size and having a reputation of being nearly impossible to train.

  3. they are trained to not care whats happening.. literally, they trained them to fight as well. war horses are trained to attack and bite people.. thats all they know.

  4. This is cool -- Thanks for asking the question or I would have never though of looking at this!!

I think the horses were trained much as the modern police trained their horses today -- a lot of desentization.  This query make me think of the classic example of the military horse being pulled on its side to provide a barrier as well as a shooting platform for a cavalry man.

This is funny and I did not know about it....Camels Corps in USA.
