  1. The poem shows a typical Aussie larikin mindset. Always ones to support the 'battler' the people loved their captor in spite of respecting their intelligence. Ned Kelly was insubordinate to the authorities causing them great angst. They didn't know how to react as the Kelly Gang was so blatant in their attacks on the established system. They made a mockery of the authorities which riled them. And hence the little people loved them. So akin to Robin Hood! For example the wikipedia article says at one time he gave his captives "drinks on the house" and proceeded to burn all the mortgage deeds of the local residents at the bank (meaning there was no record of how much they owed anymore and hence they would in theory not have to pay the rest!)

Quote: When his attempt to arrest Kelly turned into a fight, Hall drew his gun and tried to shoot him, but Kelly overpowered the policeman and humiliated him by riding him like a horse

    What a little ratbag lol!

In the following poem we know that McIntyre was the only copper to escape unharmed. All else died from both the Mansfield police group and the other group... Hence this is a very serious affair. Yet as in many other times throughout Aussie history we support the little people as the big people often abuse their power. I suppose it all stems from the convict era with so many here for petty theft and similar crimes do to the terrible economic state of England surrounding countries at that time. They may have been transported by the authorities to the penal colonies of Australia for stealing a rug for their mother dying of pneumonia or a loaf of bread for their starving family. There was a root of bitterness and a lack of trust of the authorities which still prevails somewhat today...

    Stringybark Creek

    A sergeant and three constables

    Set out from Mansfield town

Near the end of last October

    For to hunt the Kellys down;

So they travelled to the Wombat,

And thought it quite a lark,

And they camped upon the borders of

    A creek called Stringybark.

They had grub and ammunition there

To last them many a week.

Next morning two of them rode out,

    All to explore the creek.

    Leaving McIntyre behind them at

The camp to cook the grub,

And Lonigan to sweep the floor

And boss the washing tub. [31]

    Good luck with it
