  1. Ok to start with, odds are your english girth is going to be longer than your western one.

    It's very simple,

the NON elastic ends go on the right side of the saddle. The ELASTIC ends go on the left where you tighten it.

There are two straps on the girth and three strap things on the english saddle (usually)

put the girth straps on the two OUTSIDE straps on the saddle. Not one in the middle

Sorry I'm not very good at explaining without actually showing you.

    Hope this helps!

  2. I completely agree, you should first learn about horse riding then you will know the meaning of all equestrian products,

  3. the girth has useally two (or three) buckles just put them together (u should be able to fit 2 fingers under it.)

    GOOD LUCK!

  4. Well, the girth is what holds the saddle on.  So, you set the saddle on the horses back.  Then, you attach the girth (usually if only one side has elastic, attach the side w/out elastic) to the right side of the saddle under the big piece of leather where you leg would lie if you were in the saddle.

Then, pull the girth under the bell of the horse and attach (preferable the side with elastic, othewise it's nearly impossible to get tight!) the buckles to that sides (LEFT) to the leathers on that side.  There are typically three leathers, and only two buckles on the girth.  You can use any of the three leathers - I usually use the first two leathers.

There usually are some keepers on the saddle pads.  There is a wide one on the bottom that you run the girth through.  There also are either velcro ones or just ones with a little loop at the end at the front of the pad.  You put those through the first leather on each side.  That will help the pad to stay in place.

Once your'e in the saddle it's really easy to tighten the girth even more.  Just slide your leg back, pull up the flap and pull it tight - easy as pie!

  5. First things first: the girth is what goes underneath the saddle. It is what will KEEP YOU ON YOUR HORSE. Therefore, it is very important that you have your instructor or an experience horse person check it before you get on.

Okay, so obviously, there are 2 sides to the girth. There is a side with elastics (these go on the left side, or the on side) and there is a side without elastics (these go on the right side, or the offside). Okay, so now, your girth must be straight and not pulling or pinching skin underneath it or it will hurt your horse. So, a lot of people put some sheepskin around the girth to make it more comfortable.

When you do up the girth, don't go "YAY TUGGING ON THE GIRTH TO THE TOP HOLE!!" No. You have to ease into it gently saying "Okay, good boy horse, yeah, just relax, easy, easy." How would you like it if someone took your belt and yanked it to the tightest hole? Not fun, not fun.

Make sure that you use the 2 outside straps. This make sure your weight and the weight of the saddle is distributed evenly. The middle strap is an extra, in case you're on a trail ride and something wacky happens and one just happens to break.

Your girth should be just before his legs. This can be tricky, since horses have a tendency to spread their legs all over, but make sure it isn't too far back, or your saddle won't fit right.

Now, the girth must be on tight, but not TOO TIGHT that your horse can't breathe. Your instructor will check this. At the same time, horses are tricky masterminds and have mastered the art of bloating. This pretty much means that as soon as the saddle is on, some horses stick their ribcage and barrel (underside of the horse) out as much as they can so that the girth isn't as tight. In order to make sure that your hors isn't bloating, put it on, and then walk a bit with him, and then adjust it some more. (Again, your instructor will probably do this with you.)

Okay, so now we've covered 'Girth Basics 101'. I hope you learned something, and please don't hesitate to e-mail me with anymore tack related questions.

  6. find someone to teach you this - this is an important part. If you tighten it to much you might get kicked and to loose and you might fall off.  Please  find someone to help you!
