Iveta Benesova outlasts Kristyna Pliskova to enter main draw – Family Circle Cup 2012
Qualifying top seed, Iveta Benesova, needed three sets to outshine her compatriot, Kristyna Pliskova, in the qualifying competition of the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Sunday. She summed up a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 score line against the 20-year-old to secure a place
in the main draw at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Charleston, United States.
The Czech made a strong start of the match but lost her concentration after that. However, she lifted up her game again in the final set, ultimately earning the spotlight in one hour and 43 minutes against her 17th seeded fellow citizen.
Benesova stormed into the Family Circle Tennis Center and after Pliskova held her serve in the opening game, she blasted slices to go on a six-game killing spree. The higher ranked Czech kept her entire serves without facing any difficulty and cashed in
all three break opportunities to seal the opener with a breadstick.
Ranked 144th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Pliskova carried her drastic ways and lost her serve in the opening game of the following set. However, she remained focused and not only grasped her break back but also capitalised on another break chance
to clinch the equaliser with a 6-4 score line.
The match could have gone in any direction at that point but Benesova sought her rhythm again and outclassed her compatriot. She got the critical break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. In spite of losing her edge in the seventh game, the higher
seed converted another break opportunity to her advantage and pulled out the decider with a 6-3 win.
The fifth seed, Paula Ormaechea, will join Benesova into the first round. She got the better of the local starlet, Shelby Rogers, in straight sets in one hour and 49 minutes to earn the fame.
Ormaechea exchanged a series of serve breaks in the opening set but edged past the American after capitalising on her fourth break chance in the end, consequently registering a 7-5 success.
The Argentinean kept her spark lit in the proceeding set and required a single break of serve to win the set with a 6-3 score line.
