Ivo Karlovic storms by Florian Mayer into 2nd round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Ivo Karlovic, Croatian, took his 1st round win against the German Florian Mayer, beating him in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Playing at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre, Ohio the two clashed on the hard trough for the 3rd time.
Surprisingly, the 32-year-old, Karlovic, knocked over the world No.24 viciously in not more than an hour. Clearing the German from his way, the Croatian took a seat in the 2nd round of the Western & Southern Financial Open in Cincinnati.
Previously the two have been in a fight leading to a dramatic end. Karlovic took advantage of his speciality. Considering hard courts as his favourite, the Croatian stepped up on the pedal and reached his destination in 57 minutes. 
The strong right-hander has been ranked formerly as world No.14, however, dropped considerably in recent years mainly because of his age.
Mayer, on the other hand, is still trying to prove himself on all troughs. Seemingly playing for the love of the game, the 27-year-old has lost his love in 7 out of the 10 times he tried. Trying his luck on grass, clay and on hard
court circuit, the former world No.18 might need to straighten his head up now.
The 27-year-old German, however, stood the hard court for less than an hour before he walked back to the locker room distressed.
Moving on with the match, Karlovic stretched on first to open the set and took the lead, 1-0. The German, however, did not follow this time and was broken in the 2nd set as the Croatian took away another set from his
hands.
The 30-year-old went 22-year-old went he over powered the higher ranked German and stormed in the next 3 games, breaking Mayer in the 4th, to lead 5-0. The 27-year-old finally broke the silence winning game 6 before
his eventual set loss in game 7. Karlovic took the lead in the match winning the first set with ease, 6-1.
Kicking off with set 2, Mayer served first thinking to gain an advantage, however, got knocked down. Breaking the German in the opening game, Karlovic went amazing. The 30-year-old extended his lead to 2-0 before Mayer won his
first game of the second round.
The scores went up with the Croatian maintain his 2 games lead. Karlovic then finished off the second set in game 9 when he broke the German for the second time in set 2 winning 6-3. The final score read 6-1, 6-3.
The 30-year-old played a super knock for his first round win. The Croatian now sits in the 2nd round to play against the 9th seed of the event, Nicolas Almagro.
