Ivo Klec surprises Marcel Felder in the second round qualifiers – ATP VEGETA Croatia Open Umag 2012
Slovak veteran, Ivo Klec, made an upset in the qualifying rounds of the ATP VEGETA Croatia Open Umag by dumping the seventh seeded Uruguayan contender, Marcel Felder, in the second round on Sunday. The contest took two hours and
32 minutes to settle in favour of the 31-year-old Slovak, with the final scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The see-saw battle witnessed good quality tennis from both contenders, with Felder giving his opponent a real tough time before falling in the third set of the match. The seventh seed was off to a sloppy start in the opening set
and let Klec get hold of the momentum early in the contest. The Slovakian went on to pocket the first set but a valiant comeback was witnessed from Felder in the following set of the match. He managed to draw level the sets score at 1-1 but a sudden slump
in his game in the final set proved extremely taxing for him.
Klec delivered 65 per cent of his first serve on target and won 38 out of 59 points on it en route to victory. He crafted a total of 15 break points in the entire matchup but could only convert five of his chances, whilst Felder
fell short of him by one break point to finish on the losing side in the end.
The opening set ignited with a trade of break points from both ends to take the scores to 1-1. Both men then held their serves in the next six games before Klec delivered a critical blow in the ninth game to attain a 5-4 lead.
He served out of the set comprehensively got one up in the match.
The following set was a complete replication of the opener, an early exchange of break points followed by a regular game and then a break point in the eighth game. However, it was Felder who delivered two breaks of serve this time
and claimed the second set at 6-3. He couldn’t sustain his winning impetus in the final set and dropped his serve in the second and fourth games consecutively to let his inferior-ranked opponent through to the qualifying competition of the tournament.
