Ivo Minar and Boris Pashanski successful in the second round of 2011 Rai Open
Sixth seeded Ivo Minar of Czech Republic secured a thumping 6-3, 6-2 victory over Romanian Adrian Ungur on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals at the 2011 Rai Open in Rome.
Minar looked on top of his game right from the start of the match. In second game of the opening set he saved three break points with his strong baseline startegy. Minar made the crucial serve break in the sixth game of the set
to lead the game score by 4-2. He then held on to his serve games to take the set score lead 1-0.
The second set also followed a similar pattern. Minar established firm control over the contest with accurate serves and powerful backhand shots. He tested his opponent’s patience every now and then with a very clever chip shot.
The Czech tennis-pro made the serve break early in the set to gain the psychological advantage in the match. Ungur failed to handle the pressure and committed a large number of unforced errors. He looked short of confidence and miss timed his backhand shots
to hand over an easy win to his opponent.
Minar’s serve was his real asset as he fired 4 aces in the match and converted 70 per cent of the points on the first serve. He dominated his opponent in the serve return department as well claiming almost 50 per cent of the points
on return. The 26 year old reached his career high ranking of world number 62 in July 2009. However since then he has not been to find his peak form and experienced several failures on the tour. The Czech tennis-pro will be hoping to change the course of his
career with a strong performance here at the red clay courts in Rome.
Serbian Boris Pashanski also booked a quarterfinal berth at the Challenger tournament after he was awarded a win against Thomas Schoorel 6-3, 5-4 ret’d on Wednesday.
Pashanski dominated Dutch Thomas Schoorel in the opening set with some high class ground play. He executed his game plan to perfection and made his opponent run for his money. A break of serve in the third game of the set allowed
the Serbian professional to tighten the screws. Schoorel on the other hand looked as if he has lost his concentration as he was outplayed in several long rallies. Pashanski bagged the first set with a superb forehand winner down the line.
Both players exchanged breaks in the following set and held on to their serve games. However when the score was 5-4 in Schoorel’s favour, he decided not to continue due to a serious muscle injury to end the match on a disappointing
note.
