Question:

Ivy League school qualifications?

As a rising high school junior, I'm currently in the process of deciding upon which schools I should apply to and measuring my chances of success at the same time. Like anyone, I'd like a shot at Harvard, Princeton, MIT, etc., but we'll see. I recently received some of my scores from the CollegeBoard, and received the following:

SAT II Math 2: 800

SAT II Biology-M: 800

SAT II Chemistry: 790

AP Biology - 5

AP Chemistry - 5

AP Calculus - 5

AP World History - 4

My GPA is currently about a 4.0 (on a 4-pt scale where an AP is weighted as an extra +.5) at a relatively competitive high school although it will probably fluctuate in the next year. Any suggestions or assessments?

  1. i'd say those are pretty d**n good scores that give you a good shot at those schools. MIT is ridiculous however, they rejected a kid at my school who had perfect a SAT score. how'd you get your AP scores btw? i thought they weren't available until July 1st

  3. Actually, MIT and Stanford aren't Ivy League. MIT is a Division III school and competes in a virtually unknown conference. Stanford is a Pac-10 school like UCLA, USC, and Cal (Berkely). The eight Ivy League schools are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn, and Brown.

But to get into an Ivy League school, you need to also take the regular SATs, do some extracirricular activities, do something that makes you stand out and prove you're not just another overachiever trying to get into a top school. The AP classes help, though. It also helps to know or be related to someone who went to an Ivy League school who can put in a good word for you.

  4. A girl from my school got into UCLA, Berkley, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and Dartmouth with a 2150 SAT and a 4.25 GPA.  She was well rounded though as she was a cheerleader, worked to help her family, and volunteered.

    FYI, she choose Harvard.
