Izmir to Troy...?

Is it possible to do a day trip from Izmir to the ruins of Troy?

If so, approx how much will the ride/excursion cost (in USD)?

If this is not a good idea, what other options/excursions are there to do at the port of Izmir?

  1. If you venture an eleven or twelve-hour bus ride for going to Troy and then coming back to Ä°zmir, then yes, it is possible to do that. As for the price, my rough guess is that it will cost you about 60 dollars. If you don't like to do that and if you are interested in history, you can go to Bergama- it takes two hours by bus- and visit the historical sites, the Asklepon, the Acropolis and the Allonoi, which is supposed to remain under the waters of a dam and the Pergamon musem. The fare will not cost much, but I am not so sure about the tickets for those historical sites!

  2. It would take about 6 hours each way to drive from Izmir to Troy so I wouldn't attempt to do it in a day.

If you go to Canakkale and stay overnight, you could do an excursion from there. Alternatively you could combine it with a visit to Assos and stay there a couple of nights.

I lived happily in Izmir for many years but it doesn't have much to offer tourists apart from the bazaar area of Kemeralti, the Agora and Kadifekale for history, Teleferik and Asansor for interesting modes of transport with food at the end, and endless shopping malls! However, what is good about Izmir is the ease with which you can get out of the city. The following places are all possible in a day:-

Cesme, Karaburun, Kusadasi, Selcuk, Sirince, Ephesus, Didim, Miletus, Priene, Foca (eski and yeni), Sardis, Bergama, etc

Look at a map and remember that some places are served not from the main bus station but from the small one at Uckuyular.

  3. im sure you have seen the film and thats whats made you want to go however dont think its there now however from izmir you can go to ephesus and pammukale they are both stunning dalyan and the mud baths you will wanmt to live there once you go xx
