Izuki Tanaka and Jeremy Johnston clinch victory in Round 2 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
Japan’s Izuki Tanaka and America’s Jeremy Johnston walked away with top honours from their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in California,
America, on Wednesday, March 28.
Both Tanaka and Johnston made their way through into the third round (Round of 96) after clinching successful result in the second round. America’s Tim Curran and his fellow countryman Fisher Heverly confirmed their place in the next round as well.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site turned out to be pretty demanding on the opening day. Even though the size of the waves was pretty decent, lying somewhere in the range of two-to-four feet, the frequency of decent-to-good waves
was pretty low.
Pitted against Curran, his compatriot Cody Thompson and Killian Garland in the third heat, Tanaka put on a superb performance to claim the win. The Japanese surfer went down to business early in the heat and managed to post a 7.43 on the scoreboard off his
first business-wave. He soon backed it up with a 6.17-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 13.60 points.
Curran was nothing short of impressive during the four-man battle either. Collecting a couple of scores in the six-point range, he finished with a heat-total of 12.27 points to advance through into the next round.
Thompson finished third with a heat-total of 11.33 points, whereas Garland rounded out the fourth position with a heat-total of 10.40 points. Both the surfers found themselves ejected from the contention for the event-title as a result.
The fourth heat saw Johnston put on an impressive performance to finish with a heat-total of 12.27 points, which included a 5.67 and 6.60-point wave.
Heverly made the Round 2 cut as well after scoring a 5.00 off his first business-wave and adding an additional 4.70 to his account to finish with a heat-total of 9.70 points.
America’s RJ Raia and South Africa’s Davey Brand found themselves getting added to the elimination list after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 7.33 and 6.97 points respectively.
