  1. The older Mercedes V12's can develop very expensive problems. There's a mid-90's 600SL in the shop where I work right now. It has an engine performance problem. The bill, so far, is over $12,000., and we're still working on it.

If you're prepared for sky-high maintenance bills it's a great car to own! Very powerful and luxurious, but a Benz with a V8 will be easier on your wallet!

  2. Hope u have deep pockets because these things can be troublesome and maintenance is high.

  3. I think there is no way you can afford to maintain it.  Anytime anything breaks, expect a service bill of $1000 plus.  That V12 is a monster and doing anything will be extremely labor intensive. I thought about buying a 600SL, and the man who did my PPI told me he once spent about 12 hours trying to track down an oil leak.  Wiring looms ontop the engine are known to go bad, costing about $4000 to replace, and 70,000 miles is getting to that age.   If you're driving a caprice now, you're looking at the wrong car. They look good to pose in yes, but, won't do you much good when its sitting in your driveway broken and you can't afford to get it fixed.

  4. Buy a Hyundai

  5. You can't really compare a Caprice to a S600.  Aside from being 2 full-sized 4-door sedans, they are 2 very different vehicles.  The S600 was the flagship sedan from Benz at that time and it had pretty much every option available on other vehicles as standard equipment.  When everything works properly, it is a fantastic car to drive as it is very smooth, powerful, and eerily quiet.  However, since it does have all those options, things can go wrong ( and they may be pricey to repair ).

Even though the 140-chassis is a large car, that V12 engine is quite literally stuffed into the engine bay.  Working on is not as easy as the I6 or V8 engines

  6. i have a 1997 s600 sedan and i love it Mercedes s class are perfect long lasting car there are no problems with theses cars what so ever   now your buying the car for the luxury so don't suprise about the gas mileage 26 hwy 18 city

  7. horrible gas mileage.
