Question:

I’m at college and I’m so homesick!?

I just moved into my apartment and said goodbye to my parents a few hours ago. I was fine for a while but now that it’s nighttime/bedtime, I am so sad and homesick I can’t stand it. At the moment it’s too late to go out and socialize (I’m not even that social of a person anyway)…I believe this will pass in time but I still wish I was back home, with my family, in my room. Is there such a thing as a ‘cure’ for homesickness??

  1. Don't give it a second thought.

Just means you are going through an adjustment period.

Talk to people at home, temporarily, to bridge this gap.

The fact that you are homesick, indicates that you have some fond memories or close attachments there.

Once you bond with some new people at college, these feelings will dissipate.

No cure, just the placebo effect of home.

  2. Well, try to find some other interests. I do this, when I am looking for something to do, I answer questions. (lol) You will always miss your parents. Mine have both passed away, so you can imagine what I go through some times. It's important however, that you take the next the step to becoming an adult. If you just miss them, as they must have been loving and good company, that's normal. You can do a lot to help yourself. Go do things in your spare time that will take your mind off of things. Volunteer in your spare time, say at the dog pound. That will make you tired and you will go to sleep at night. As you become known at your new location, you will develop friends, and it will take your mind off it. It's always good to miss people you love, it makes love stronger. Just don't let it overwhelm you.

  3. Not really. Just make it through til tomorrow. Do whatever you would normally do at home - read call a friend or turn on the tv - anything to get your mind off of the fact that you miss home. During the day you will meet so many people and be so busy you will realize how great college can be! It will be the greatest time of your life! This is the first time that you can do whatever you want to do, you can be anyone you want and you can really open up! One thing - always go to the party but two drinks only! You are going to party - that's what college kids do - don't over do it or college can be the worst time of your life.

  4. Ah yes, the good old days ... college.

This is the first day you are officially "alone". Yes, it's normal to feel alone and homesick ... you've been with your family since birth. Leaving the nest isn't easy.

This feeling will pass, and in many student's cases, very quickly. If you want to make the process even faster, follow these steps.

    1. Change your mindset: this is the most important. Whenever your mind starts to wander and think about how much you miss your old nest, stop your thinking and start focusing on how *free* you are right now. You can do whatever you want, noone tells you when to do this or that. Focus on how cool it that this is the beginning of becoming a real person.

    2. Set up communications: Agree with your parents on some "video chat" schedule, so that you can web-cam chat with them on a regular basis. This helps A LOT, and is much better than phone call. You get the best of both worlds out of it: You can chat with them without leaving your apartment so you don't feel "away" from them as much, yet at the same time ... it's your *own* apartment.

    3. Start thinking about hobbies, interests, etc that you want to get into. This is the time in your life with enough free time to do those things you always wanted to do.

    4. Find friends: Close college buddies quickly become your social support group. This makes you less homeless.

    Good luck.

  5. That is quite normal and happens for some time to a lesser or greater extent. Just call your folks, send them an email, relax and get ready for the olympics of education. You can and will do it. Now be cheerful and smile!

  6. Close your eyes and hold onto something familiar from home [blanket, etc.] Think of some of the great times you had this summer.

Or imagine the way your Mom feels when she hugs you or the way Dad's scruffy cheek feels before he shaves. Keep going with this and you will fall asleep in a happy frame of mind.

  7. You sweet sweet thing. You must love your parents and home very much. Most kids just want to get out. Time is the only thing that will help you get through it. Real soon you will make new friends and your classes will keep you busy. Then your parents will wonder why you don't call anymore. Hopefully you will never lose the love you have for home. Always remember no matter how old you get...they are always there for you. You will get through this because of the sweetness in your heart:)

  8. Not much of a cure, but you could write about it in a journal or write them a letter - that used to help me.  Also remember that this is probably the worst it will get and it will go away soon x

  9. there is no cure for home sickness

    only your parents
