J.B. Holmes makes charge in the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic
J.B. Holmes exhibited an impressive performance in the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic and carded a six-under par 64 to share the second spot on the leaderboard on Friday, June 8, 2012.
Holmes kicked off the round in an impressive style as he carded two consecutive birdies on the second and third hole. The highlight of his performance includes four back-to-back birdies, starting from the sixth hole.
Therefore, he was six-under for the round through the front nine of the course. A birdie and a bogey on the back nine allowed him to stand one stroke behind the leader Rory McIlroy.
“Played really well today, hit my irons great and made a few putts on the front side and it was a good round for me,” he said.
According to him, his putting was the key to his success in the second round at the TPC Southwind.
“Lot of the putts that I made, I just hit the ball in the right spot on the green where there wasn't a whole lot of break,” he said. “I was keeping it below the hole, and they were a ball outside or fairly straight putts, so it was not the side hill breakers”.
Holmes is now happy to have posted a good score on the leaderboard while entering the final two rounds.
He had a brain surgery early this year, which affected his performance to a great extent. That was the time when the golf commentators were expecting that his career might end because of the seriousness of the surgery.
Yet, he managed to play some good golf on the tour and came to Memphis after recording a top-15 finish in the last event that he played.
Holmes is now confident to make another good run in the final two rounds to improve his record on the PGA Tour this year.
In the meantime, the overnight leader Jeff Maggert and Kevin Stadler also joined him on the leaderboard after carding two-under and five-under par scores, respectively.
The other overnight leader John Merrick, Chad Campbell and Kevin Kisner were further a stroke behind to share the fifth position.
