J. C. Romero in the St. Louis Cardinals – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals made another move on Thursday, December 15, to add and strengthen their roster by signing one-year deal with J.C. Romero. The left-handed pitcher marks the Cardinals efforts to fill the gaps as it became their third signing this week.
Coming from Colorado Rockies, the win-loss record of Romero is 34-28 with 4.07 ERA. He has previously remained associated with the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies which spans for over a decade of association with
all these teams.
Having appeared in 664 games, the record of 34-28 may not come across as something really impressive given the 4.07 ERA that comes with it as he began his career in 2002.
But what does add to his favourable statistical record is his ability to pitch no less than 517 innings throughout his career, which stands second among the lefty reliever of the MLB.
Earlier those whom the St. Louis Cardinals moved to sign were Skip Schumaker and Rafael Furcal, each with two-year contracts simultaneously.
The moves were aimed at, as reports trickled in, at avoiding the arbitration. The short-stop Furcal and out-fielder Schumaker will further strengthen the team which has the illuminating distinction of winning the World Series this year.
For the general manager of the club, John Mozeliak, these back-to-back signings of the players had become the need of time. Emphasising the fact that a lot was in the air after Pujols’ contract; thus things materialised gradually.
"I think a lot was up in the air as we were in the Pujols negotiations, but when that was resolved it freed up a lot of time so that we were able to start accomplishing some of the things we did this past week," Mozeliak said.
Romero has enjoyed a good reputation as the effective closer. His arrival is indeed a sign that the club is taking positive steps towards increasing their depth.
What remains to be seen is how these newly signed players contribute to the wins of the St. Louis Cardinals given the departure of Albert Pujols lately.
