J.J. Redick stars as Orlando Magic down Phoenix Suns 98-90: NBA Recap
J.J. Redick scored 20 points and handed out 9 assists to lead Orlando Magic to a 98-90 win over the Phoenix Suns Sunday night. This was Suns’ 7th straight loss, their longest losing streak since the 2004 season. The
win also concluded the Magic 5-game road trip and they were pleased with their 3-2 performance.
Rookie Andrew Nicholson, the overall 19th pick this draft, who was passed by the Suns amongst many others, had a big night with 19 points and 9 rebounds for the Magic. Glen Davis posted 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds
while Arron Afflalo added 14 points.
Shannon Brown led the Suns with the team-high 17 points; Jared Dudley had 15 points while Luis Scola came off the bench to add 11 points.
"We are playing spot basketball, we play good for two minutes, and then we're bad for seven. Then we're good for five, and we're bad for three.” said the Suns coach Alvin Gentry.
The Suns started off well and scored the first 6 points of the game and Markieff Morris layup moments later had them up 9-2. Another deuce by Morris pushed their lead to 13-4 before the Magic started slashing the deficit, and Redick
fired a three pointer to make it 11-16 for Orlando. An Afflalo jumper reduced the deficit down to 1 before a Gortat dunk shot at the close of the period had the Suns up 23-20.
A Luis Scola layup early in the second period put the Magic up 29-22 but the Suns were close by and scored a 7 nil spurt to tie the score on 29. Wesley Johnson nailed a three pointer to put the Suns ahead but two free throws by
Redick tied the score on 34. The Magic began to pull ahead later in the period and an 8 nil run put them up 43-36 and a Vucevic jump shot later in the period had them leading by 53-48 by halftime.
Orlando pushed their lead to 57-48 before the Suns came back to snatch the lead as they went up 59-57 at the back of an 11 nil burst. Brown shot a three pointer to put the Suns up 67-61 but the Magic came back later in the period
to take a 71-70 lead by the end of the period.
The score was tied on 75 early in the period before the Magic started to pull ahead and were up 86-79 with a Nicholson dunk. A 7 nil run pushed their lead to 93-82 with 4:38 on the regulation. The Suns tried their best and a Marcin
Gortat jumper made it a 5 point game at one stage but the Magic closed out the game comfortably in the end as they won 98-90.
