I live in Ireland and I would like to go to the USA for a year to work as an au pair. I've known the family for years and dont need an au pair agency. But i cant seem to find information on how to apply for a J1 visa without going through an agency. (They cost about $6000)Has anyone any info on how to do this and how much it will cost?

  1. Because of increased security, it doesn't appear you can get a J1 visa without having a sponsoring agency. There are various classes you must take before being placed with a family. Yu don't say if you are in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, you can contact the nearest US Consulate for guidence. You can also contact some Au Pair agencies in the US and see if they would be willing to sponsor you. It is their job to find a host family and you can tell them the family you wish to work for and they can probably set it up for you.

    Good luck.
