JB Holmes makes strong start at the Greenbrier Classic
JB Holmes fired a five-under par 65 in the opening round of the Greenbrier Classic, at Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, to tie for the fifth spot on the leaderboard, on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Holmes got off to a slow start and remained even par through 10 holes after carding two birdies against two bogeys on the front nine.
He picked some pace starting from the 11th hole and recorded a total of five birdies on the back nine. He settled two strokes behind the leader Vijay Singh.
“I had a good round. Started out a little slow on the front. I hit it well, just didn't look like I got much scoring ability out of the front,” he said.
“But I played great on the back, made a bunch of birdies and got in the house with a -- you know, finished with three birdies, so it was a good finish”.
The highlight of his performance includes the consecutive birdies towards the end of his round, especially the one on the 18th when he drove the ball to land within one foot to the hole.
“I had the right club, I had a little 8 iron, just turned it a little bit with the wind, hit it right -- I couldn't see it from back there, but I knew people acted like it was getting close to going in,” he said.
“When I got up to the green and was able to see it, it was nice to have that little tap-in there to finish the round”.
While talking about the conditions, he told that the modest winds provided him the chance to negotiate perfect shots on the course.
In the meantime, Webb Simpson, Andres Romero and Garth Mulroy also joined him on the leaderboard after recording a 65 each.
Jeff Maggert, Martin Flores and Jonathan Byrd were tied for the second position after carding a six-under par 64 each. Maggert and Flores had remained bogey-free throughout the day and recorded six birdies each.
Tiger Woods, one of the favourites in the field, finished one-over par for the round after signing three bogeys and a double bogey against four birdies.
