The recall was the result of a pointless lawsuit. Someone tried shooting the gun without the bolt retaining s***w (the little silver s***w on the left side of the gun) installed and yanked the bolt out while cycling it, causing him to get bopped on the snout. He didn't win that lawsuit but Sears recalled all of the bolts (rendering the guns useless) in order to cover their butts.
A lot of good guns were destroyed this way because when the recall was first issued the bounty was well in excess of what the guns were worth. I'm not sure if the recall is still active, if it is you might get a small gift card or a nice "thank you" letter if you turn the bolt in. Honestly I'd rather just keep the gun.
