  1. Actually, when they entered the Congress together they were and remained close friends for many years. They had many things in common, they were both young Navy veterans, they both had started families right after the war, and they both had aspirations to be great men. At the time, they were both admirers of Senator McCarthy as well.

    They would part ways later on, and both felt betrayed by the other, though Nixon certainly seems to have taken it much harder on the chin.
