JJ Henry fires another good round at the John Deere Classic
JJ Henry carded a seven-under par 64 on Friday, to hang on to a shared fourth place midway through the US PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic, at TPC Deere Run. It was the second best round of the day after Jeff Maggert’s flawless nine-under par score.
Henry got off to a stunning start and went five-under on the back nine of the course. Through 17 holes (No. 8), he was sharing the second place with a 12-under par overall score.
However, a bogey to end the round dragged him down to share the fourth position along with three other players — Gary Christian, Ricky Barnes and Robert Garrigus.
“Just a great, fun golf course to play. Starting the week you know you're going to have to shoot some low scores,” said Henry, whose only PGA Tour victory came in the 2006 Buick Championship.
“Greens are soft and receptive, so you got to have that aggressive mentality. I was able to get off to a good start. I think I was 8-under through the first 11 holes”.
According to him, he was great with his irons and enjoyed his game off the tee. However, his putting was not as good as it should have been during the opening two rounds.
He told that he missed several birdie chances and most of the times he had to tap-in the ball to complete the holes.
“I hit a lot of great iron shots, kept the ball in play off the tee,” he said. “Looking back, I think my longest birdie putt might have been about six, eight feet. Hit a lot of tap-ins”.
He is currently playing the Deere Classic for the seventh time in his career and missed the cut only once in his last six appearances. His best finish came in the 2009 season, when he tied for the fifth position with a 16-under par tournament score.
This time, he is confident to improve his track record in the event with a consistent game in the remaining two rounds on weekend. Currently, he is just two strokes behind the leader Troy Matteson.
