JJ Henry’s meltdown on the 17th hole costs him HP Byron Nelson Championship victory – Golf News
JJ Henry faltered on the final round’s 17th hole at the HP Byron Nelson Championship to give away the lead to his nearest rivals and finished tied for the third position on Sunday, May 20, 2012.
Henry broke the par in each of the four rounds and never scored more than 68. He recorded a 68 each in the opening two rounds followed by a 67 on the weekend.
While entering the final round, he was just two strokes behind the leader Jason Dufner at seven-under par.
On Sunday, the TPC Four Seasons Resort again witnessed him make a solid start, as he carded a birdie on the very first hole he played.
A bogey on the fourth hole pushed him back to an equal-par score for the round. However, he did not allow the bogey to shatter his confidence and recorded an amazing hole-in-one stroke on par-three fifth hole.
Thereafter, he managed to par nine hole followed by two consecutive birdies. That was the time when he had the lead with an opportunity of recording the second PGA Tour win of his career.
However, the second shot on the 17th hole flew over the green and disappeared. Therefore, he had to make another three strokes to turn the ball into the hole.
“Obviously it's disappointing,” he said. “I played great all day, and to be honesty thought I had a great shot on 17. I hit the line exactly where I tried to, and it carried about 6 or 7 yards too far and it's disappointing but that's golf”.
“I hit a wedge, it just kind of landed down wind, past the hole and trickle, trickle and we saw it disappear and everyone went nuts! It was a great start to the day! Obviously we'll roll with it,” he added.
In the meantime, Jason Dufner, continued playing good golf and he was tied for the top position while reaching the final hole following Henry’s meltdown.
There, he managed to score a 25-foot birdie that earned him the second victory of his career on the PGA Tour.
Despite losing to Dufner, Henry is still positive aboout making the best of his cirumstances to perform better in future.
“It was definitely disappointing, but I played great today, I got a lot to be proud of,” he said.
