South African middle-order batsman Jean Paul Duminy has declared that he would like to make the World Cup his own by playing a leading role in the campaign. The Proteas are desperate to end its trophy jinx by winning the most coveted
event in international cricket, the ODI World Cup.
Duminy has been one of the leading performers for his team in recent years. He has played an integral part in providing stability in the lower half of the innings and would be aiming to play a similar role in the tournament for his
side. During the World Cup scoring runs at the end of the innings would be extremely crucial, especially with the availability of the power play during the death overs of the innings.
He played a subdued part in the warm up win over the Australians, yet stated that he was not overly concerned, as he had a decent knock that gave him a fair idea of the conditions that he is set to encounter in the three host countries.
“I had decent time out in the middle in the previous game so I am not really worried," Duminy said.
He started his innings rather sluggishly with his batting partner at the other end Du Plessis also struggling to cope with the docile track where batting was not an easy proposition. However, the innings has given him some much needed
confidence as he looks forward to starting the Proteas campaign on a strong note.
The good thing for him is that he got some time in the middle and that should help him when the time comes to perform in the high profile tournament.
Although the warm-ups served the purpose of giving the top order a good run, for Duminy the games mean a chance of fine tuning preparations ahead of the main event, which can provide some real pressure moments. Moments that can be
detrimental to a team’s success.
Duminy stated that his approach to the tournament is simple he wants to make a contribution by scoring runs when needed. The lower order of the Proteas is not as strong as it was during their past World Cup campaigns when they had
the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lance-Klusener-c72175, Shaun Pollock and Mark Boucher who all had the ability to hit the ball cleanly and possessed the ability to graft as per the situation.
However there is one tag that is set to haunt the Proteas again if they fail to win the title. The Chokers tag, which has followed them since the 1996 World Cup where they crashed out in the quarter-finals against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 after
winning all their group games in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
Duminy thinks that the team is ready to cross the final hurdle and wants his side to make it to its first ever final and then hopefully win the title for the country.
"We know that tag hunts us quite a bit but there are a lot of new faces in the team. Hopefully that tag won't bother us too much in going all the way in this tournament, we've been putting building blocks in place before the first
game and we are looking forward to the challenge," exclaimed Duminy.
The South Africans are placed in Group B of the 14 nation tournament, this year they would be playing their group games at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 for the quarter-finals.
