  1. Chuck Fleetwood-Smith (Australia)

    First-class average: 7.34.  :)

  2. 21 players share the dubious distinction of being the worst opening batsman in the history of Test cricket, as defined by batting average.

All 21 players have an average of 0.00 when opeing the innings. The roll of 'dishonour' is as follows:

    E.G. Arnold, D.S.Atkinson, M.C.Bird, Hon.I.F.W.Bligh, J.H.Board, L.C.Braund, H.R.Butt, L.B.Fishlock, L.O.Fleetwood-Smith, G.F.Grace, S.C.Guillen, A.Hill, J.Iddon, A.R.Lewis, I.Meckiff, K.D.Meuleman, W.J.O'Reilly, C.O.C.Pearse, A.R.Richards, C.I.J.Smith. D.P.Viljoen.

All those players opened the innings in one Test innings, and were dismissed for 0.

The exception is D.P.Viljoen, who is the only player to have been dismissed twice for 0 on the only occasions he has opened in Test cricket.

So Dirk Viljoen of Zimbabwe is the worst opening batsman in Test history.
