JURY Duty?!?

i woke up and decided i was well enough to walk down stairs (since i am recoving from surgery) and i find in my mail a letter that is summoning me to jury duty for the month of May. This wouldn't be a big deal at all if i weren't A) still in highschool until June 2nd when i will graduate B) i'm trying to start a new job for summer C) pretty much will be gone in summer until june 26 and D) getting ready to go to the university of alabama in august... so how on earth do i get out of jury duty? Can they really make an 18 yr old still going to highschool participate in jury duty.. because i feel i'd miss out on my school work/tests and i would be at a great disadvantage. Oh i live in Kentucky by the way.

  1. There should be a place on the form where you can write in "full-time student—high school" and mail it back in.

  2. yeah, and how did they get your name, huh? did you supposedly register to vote, that is how they keep messing with me,ive been summoned twice now in the past 3 years, and it is pissing me off,i dont care if its my civic duty or not,i dont want a d**n thing to do with any of it,i hate all the legal grandstanding that they do and to tell the truth ,it all bores me to death,i have never voted -ever and i know i never registered, but the letter said that they got my name from that source, which is utter bullshit.what i really dont like is the way the letter says that if i dont answer all of thier questions correctly and to thier satisfaction, that i will be called in to answer for my remarks in front of a review board and may suffer a contempt of court charge, ive never been arrested, never went to jail and i work and pay my taxes,i am a law-abiding citizen and i dont appreciate being threatened via the mail like that, that kind of **** is what really makes our system look like some kind of hitlerish regime, its bullshit that they can force you to do something that you dont want to do,yea im pissed about this issue.

  3. Letting them know that the Jury Duty would be a hard ship is usually one way of getting a sympathetic ear.

Most judges don't want a jurist who is heavily distracted anyway.

I wanted to participate in Jury Duty, yet was spared from it when I was able to demonstrate that I wasn't impressed with a plaintiff's desire to sue someone over some frivilous issue.

  4. You are excused..there are many reasons to be excused and yours fits.

  5. Well, jury duty is a civic duty.  Nothing is more important than participating in the important things that many men and women have died and fought for so that the common person can actually matter in the workings of our government.  But, you also have a choice to ignore the deaths of many fighting men and women, and shirk that responsibility.  But being that you are still in high school you probably won't be selected anyway.  But you still will have to appear at the appointed time and place.

  6. I dont know the way it is in Kentucky-but there's usually a portion of the summons that tells you how to postpone jury duty. You can get a note from your doctor regarding recent surgery and ask if you can do your duty later on this year. You can also  ask to change locations. It's getting harder and harder to get out of jury duty, but I've found they will work with you. The last 2 times I was summoned,I called in every day for a week and never did go to a courthouse.

  7. You should inform the courts that you're still a student and that you have classes that day.  However, if the letter wasn't sent registered mail (meaning you had to sign for it), then you could get by just ignoring it, as no one can prove you were ever alerted to the requirement.  The choice is yours.

  8. There should be some way to contact them listed on the notice. You can call or write a letter and provide some proof that you are attending High School. That will be enough to get you out of it this time. The job wouldn't be a problem, they can't hold jury duty against you by law, if they do anything negative, it would be very bad for them.

  9. They will excuse you since you are still in high school.  Just contact them and let them know you are still a student, and request to be excused.

  10. they can make you attend, but contact them and tell them you are still in HS,dont tell them the rest of the spiel you rambled on about here, and they will most likely excuse you.what YOU want or FEEL has nothing to do with jury duty,it IS your civic responsibility, alot of others have been in your place, and have served anyway, welcome to the real world.

  11. I actually had jury duty this past Wednesday. If they can force me to miss work, (at a big financial cost, btw) they can and will force you to miss school. If you get lucky, you'll be out by noon. I wasn't lucky, I was there until 4:00. And allmost got stuck on a case that was going to last 4 - 5 days. I'm in Ma., but I don't think it matters.

  12. I live in Illinois and have had a summons 3 times. Never showed. Im sure it will catch up to me one day.

When I was in college though I had a professor write a letter stating I had a test that day and would not make it to jury duty. That seemed to work.

When my mom got a summons she wrote that she has a young child and no babysitter, and that worked as well.

  13. call them up and tell them u r a student, they will prbably let you postpone it until sumer, when there is not school

  14. i was summoned twice for jury duty but i didn't have to attend because i was a full time college student.  on the summons there should be a place where you tell them you are either a student, have children under 10, ect.  and then you just mail it off.  you can use (being a high school or full time student) to get out of it.  that's what i did.

  15. its the law you have to do it. if you do not show up they arrest you.
